The role of SENCO

The adult tasked as SENCO is responsible for all SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEED matters.

It is his / her responsibility to keep a SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEED REGISTER.

It is also his / her role to oversee the SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEED policy and the implementation of such.

DUTIES

  • To work alongside parent / carer, and keyworker. To take initial action when a concern is identified, in the form of record keeping and observation.
  • To gather information and co - ordinate the child's special education provision. Working with pre - school workers & parents. The SENCO then prepares an individual education plan. To write developmental reports as requested by agencies with parental consent.
  • External support can be sought after reviews and with parental consent.
  • Once a child is referred for assessment for SEN it is the SENCO role to provide assistance.
  • If the child is considered by LEA for statement of SEN, arrangements will be made for his / her educational provisions.
