Children decide themselves where an item should go: For example the position of each piece of furniture within the house, should it go upstairs / downstairs. Place the chair under the table. The use of these words becomes everyday occurrence. Position, up / down / under / over.

When the shop is out the children decide how much something will be and await the correct amount from the customer.

The children use their counting skills and develop their mathematical learning even with simple building blocks, how many blocks have you got? How tall is your tower? Your tower is smaller than my one.

When we make paints counting skills are used.

When making playdough, weighing skill come into effect. How much do we need, your piece of playdough is heavier / lighter.

At the puzzle table children match the right shape.

During free play, discussion with children expands mathematical skills, how many cars have you got? If I have this car how many are left? (Adding / subtracting)

Sand and water play enables the children to use their own ideas to solve practical problems.

Music time / singing / storytime familiar tunes and number songs, favourite stories expand on their number learning.
